SURFACE PERPARATION
|
(a) On untreated wood -The surface must be sealed with appropriate sealer and sanded using fine sand paper. Then the sanded surface should be cleaned and it ready for the finishing coat.
(b) On previously treated wood - Previously waxed (polished) floors are difficult to coat with varnish, as ever small residences of wax will adversely affect the drying and adhesion of the varnish. Removal of wax or polish may be tried by repeated washing with white spirit, but is not always possible. Previously varnished wood must be cleaned thoroughly and sanded with fine sanding paper to provide a suitable surface for the following coats of varnish. It is advisable to test the recoatability of the old varnish by applying a coat of undiluted varnish on a small area to ensure that drying and adhesion are satisfactory.
